The New York Empire could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Manny Lopez into a win. Instead, the Detroit Vipers prevailed, 3-2. Lopez threw 8.1 innings of 4-hit ball. Enrique Flores snagged the win in relief. He goes to 1-0 on the season. Ricky Rael suffered the loss. The third-place Vipers are now 17-17, the Empire 22-12.

The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the tenth. With Detroit trailing 2-1, Brock Smith hit a fastball from Ricky Rael to right for a 2-run single. Just like that, the Vipers had a walk-off win.

"The crowd was boisterous today," said Smith.
