| Jackals Lose, 3-1, as Vipers Rally | Detroit Vipers pitcher Steve Van Orsdol was in fine form, leading his team past the Jacksonville Jackals, 3-1. Detroit reliever Dave Labbee was the winner. His record is now 4-1. The losing pitcher was David Melchor. Gabe Stanger earned the save for Detroit.
The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Gene Reedy came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Jacksonville pitcher David Melchor, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Detroit on top, 2-1.
"Steve was pounding the zone," said Detroit manager David Fields.
The Vipers now own a record of 31-29.
