| Sunrays Defeat Hawks, 4-2 | The Sunrays earned a hard-fought, 4-2 win in 10 innings at Hawks Park. To do so required withstanding a fine effort from Chicago pitcher Mike Spaw. Spaw went 5 innings and allowed 1 run. Tampa Bay reliever Jerry Gripper was the winner. His record is now 6-1. The losing pitcher was Adam Thompson. The Sunrays improved their record to 26-42 by beating Chicago.
Tampa Bay used the timely hitting of Mike Ness to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Sunrays on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
In postgame comments to the Tampa Bay Herald, Ness said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
