The Philadelphia Fury had to overcome a fine effort from Miami pitcher Roy Birley to win, 4-2, at Fury Field. Birley went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs. The win belonged to Mike Schield in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Ron Mello took the loss for Miami. Philadelphia is now 35-48, Miami 47-36.

Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead on Daniel Contreras's 19th double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Contreras hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Miami pitcher Ron Mello visibly frustrated.

"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Contreras.
