| Rangers Edge Firebirds, 4-3 | Houston pitcher Jake Reed had a large part in his team beating the Phoenix Firebirds, 4-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Reed, now 1-0, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 8, walking 0, and allowing 2 runs. With their winning streak at 4, the Rangers have raced to a strong start this season.
Houston used the timely hitting of Bob Skolnick to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Rangers ahead, 4-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one.
Phoenix manager David Fields said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
