Stephen Wilkins and the Chicago Hawks opened the Wildcard in brilliant fashion, traveling to Miami and shutting out the host Makos at Honolulu Stadium, 1-0, to secure an important 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series. Wilkins, the Hawks right-hander, threw 7.1 innings of shutout ball.

Wilkins allowed no runs on 2 hits over 7.1 innings for the Hawks. He walked 3 and struck out 7.

"It was a tough night at the plate," said Miami manager David Fields.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday at Hawks Park in Chicago.
