Firebirds Best Rangers in Pitching Duel
The Houston Rangers got a sterling performance from pitcher Walt Samuels, but the Phoenix Firebirds still prevailed, 2-0. Samuels threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball. Houston, with the loss, is still a stout 4-1.

The Rangers had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Firebirds going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the slick-fielding shortstop Saulo Masya came to the plate. Masya hit a solo home run on a first pitch fastball from Houston hurler Walt Samuels. It was Masya's 1st home run of the year.

"Bottom line," said Houston skipper David Fields, "we didn't play well enough to win."
